Penguin Random House Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for Everyone and No One (Penguin Classics) Customer Reviews

:
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from A. Lammers -- Poor translation by Kaufmann : I was sent the wrong edition of this book. I ordered the Hollingdale translation of Nietzsche's Also sprach Zarathustra, but in its place I received the Kaufmann translation. These two translations are quite different. Walter Kaufmann's policy was to reduce what he viewed as Nietzsche's melodrama. In doing so, he removed most of the music of Nietzsche's language. He also changed the line breaks, making the poetic form of the original into ordinary paragraphs. Etc., etc. In effect, my order was not filled. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Love it : Ever since reading Nietzsche for the first time, I've gotten super pretentious. Still haven't learned how to spell Nietzsche without using autocorrect though, so I should probably buy and read more. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2018 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from SAH -- 1 star is for the translation/Dover edition, not an indictment on the book's content : When I saw "Thus Spake Zarathustra" by Dover at $2.5, new, sold through Prime, I thought it was a great deal. But that "Spake" in the title should have been a red flag...I missed it. If you want to add Shakespearean English to an already difficult text, then go for Dover Edition, translated in 1911 by T. Common. But if you want a modern English version, so you can focus on the meaning of the sentences rather than making an effort to translate the translation to modern English, then go for the Hollingdale 1969 translation by Penguin Classics instead. The example below suffices: ( Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Arthur Robey -- Divine madness : Nietzche dances along the edge of schizophrenia, which a Horrobin has noted is HUMAN WRIT LARGE. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2018 )
  • from Aran Joseph CanesTop Contributor: Philosophy -- TOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICE : An Experiment on The Human Condition ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from user -- Described as “like new” when it’s being sold as used for the second time : Honestly feels like a scam because I paid more than the original price marked on the back of the book while it’s clearly being sold for the second time as used judging from the tags. Condition okay but definitely not “like new” as described. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from A M -- Man has a chance to be angelic : For those who are a) not merely peace seekers but bliss seekers who are ready to risk peace for bliss and b) willing to use this book for introspection not merely for formula mimicking, this book can bring them to exceptional heights and depths. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joshua Leeger -- Great book, very good translation : I believe Nietzsche saw his "Zarathurstra" as his magnum opus, the artistic-expressive summary of his beliefs. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2015 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Durga Prasad -- Wrong product : Received 'Home Science - class 12' book instead. Nice troll, Amazon 👊 ( Reviewed in India on July 2, 2018 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mr. M. A. Gordon -- Unofficial sequel to Zend Avesta, and the Gospels for good measure : Not an easy book to get through from beginning to end, but still a monumental contribution to continental and critical philosophy, and indeed western literature. This isn't necessarily the first (or only) book you should read by Nietzsche (that would be Genealogy of Morals and Birth of Tragedy), but certainly not the last. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 28, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Manendra -- Ah ! This. : Before writing 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' Nietzsche wrote to his friend in a letter that he did not have a single reason to live even tomorrow, he was extremely despondent at that time. From the 'understanding' of this chaotic phase of his life this book came out in existence. ( Reviewed in India on June 13, 2018 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Douglas Rattray -- Very poetic (maybe difficult to read) prose : I'm not sure that this book would be the best place to start if you want an intro to Nietzsche - the book can be difficult to read due to the style and it might not be easy to parse Nietzsche's philosophy from this text. I'd recommend reading "Beyond good and evil" by Nietzsche or "Hiking with Nietzsche" by John Kaag prior to this book. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 30, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from PR -- Uplifting, powerful and humane : Full, just FULL of powerful aphorisms to quote in journal writing. Beware of sounding overblown or plain weird. There is an overarching theory to be found here and it is more inspiring and humane than some seem to think. Certainly I can see why the Nazis misunderstood and misused it, as they did when they purloined the swastika from India, a peace symbol. The ideas in this book can better be used for spiritual uplift in my opinion. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 28, 2016 )
