:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Avid reader -- Pretty good... : Okay so if you like the closeted gay jock who secretly wants the out of the closet gay guy, you'll probably enjoy this book. There's lots of sex as well if that's something you're looking for (I tend to want more plot than a series of sex scenes, but that's just me). I think the thing I disliked the most was Connor's unreasonable possessiveness and demanding to know everything about Kai, especially since he was so damn secretive. I actually disliked Connor a lot and found his jealousy at Kai's best friend and his insisting Kai basically quit his job so he'd be able to spend all his time with Connor. I'd give it a 3.5. it did have pretty good editing as well, which I've found to be lacking in many books. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )

I project myself too much into the characters, which wouldn't do the book justice. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Coffee♥︎ -- complicated feelings (in a good way) : Kai is a character with exceptional strength, and a lot of it comes from the fact that he’s *had* to be strong-- life has not dealt him an easy hand. That’s not to take away from the strength of his character, but rather to emphasize that he’s adapted to and overcome a number of challenges, and there are more to come. I appreciate the complexity of the socio-economic dynamics the author works into this story: the thread of realism that complexity provides grounds both the central relationship and a lot of the other events from the plot. I’ll avoid spoilers, but things were complicated even before the haunting aspects. Speaking of the central relationship, it’s complex as well, and Conner, Kai’s love interest, is not always likable or easy to relate to. He can be jealous, controlling, and manipulative, he’s often unaware of his own privilege and it takes a lot to jolt him out of putting himself first. My knee-jerk reaction was that Kai deserves better than Conner, but the argument this novel is making instead is that Kai deserves to choose for himself: he sees Conner, the bad as well as the good, and ultimately, that really is enough. It’s a nuanced take on relationships, romance, and happily-ever-after, and while it took me a minute or two (or several) to really appreciate it, I think my ultimate takeaway is that it fits perfectly into the kind of story this novel wants to tell, and I’m glad that I read it.
